2008-09 Grant Recipients

2008-09 Giving Theme:  Women GIVE

YWL of New Canaan is pleased to have awarded over $63,000 to 22 charitable3 organizations for the 2008-2009 year.  This year’s giving theme “Women: Guide, Improve, Visualize, Educate” is best highlighted through three charitable organizations: Elderhouse, Domestic Violence Crisis Center, Stamford Hospital’s Mobile mammography Program.

ElderHouse

ElderHouse Adult Day Center is committed to providing aging seniors with a safe, nurturing environment where they can share time with others while receiving the care they need. Their accredited medical model program is designed to improve quality of life by helping seniors remain as independent as possible and to provide caregivers peace of mind.  For 30 years ElderHouse has raised the standard of care for seniors with chronic illness. Hundreds of seniors have avoided early placement in long-term care facilities due to participation at ElderHouse.  ElderHouse is open to those who need their services regardless of their ability to pay.  The YWL grant will provide support services for the women caregivers.

Domestic Violence Crisis Center

Over the past 28 years, the DVCC has been providing crisis services to battered women and their children and safeguarding their rights through legal, housing, medical, counseling, and educational programs.  The DVCC is the only crisis center serving all of Fairfield County.  The YWL grant will support the first Medical Advocacy Project which will provide on-site medical advocacy services, universal screening, educational programs for physicians, residents and nurses, evaluation of interventions, and expand coordination with local law enforcement.

Stamford Hospital Mobile Mammography

The Stamford Hospital’s Mobile Mammography program was created 13 years ago to screen and educate the uninsured or underinsured age appropriate women of Stamford and Fairfield County.  In 2009, there will be 1,200 or more procedures provided at 30 sites and in 13 communities.  The Mobile Mammography program has a vision of improving the quality of the under served woman.  The program guides, comforts and supports the women through the process regardless of income or background.  The YWL’s grant will provide mammographies to 51 women without insurance and follow-up care to an additional 12 women.
