YWL of New Canaan is pleased to have awarded over $83,000 to 30 charitable organizations for the 2009-2010 year.  This year’s giving theme “Community: Strengthen, Teach, Achieve, Revive, Serve” is best highlighted through three charitable organizations: Operation Hope, Mid-Fairfield Hospice, and A Better Chance, Inc.

(YWL Grant Recipients (L to R): Amy Burger, YWL Charity Research Chair; Christine Pfeffer, Director of Hospice; Melanie Berman, President of A Better Chance; Liz Bennett, Grants Manager of Operation Hope; Rebecca Minnock, Shelter and Program Manager of Operation Hope; Kelly Daniel, ‘09-‘10 YWL President)

Operation Hope’s work program provides real work opportunities to those who live in homeless shelters.  There is job training for those with little or no experience, help with references and resumes.  The clients can increase their self-esteem, raise their income, become independent again and community ties are strengthened.

Mid-Fairfield Hospice provides end-of-life care to terminally ill individuals and support for their families.  The volunteers are trained in respite and peer counseling, as well as giving emotional support and companionship.  These volunteers allow the patient to complete their journey with dignity, and help the family cope with the pain of loss.

A Better Chance, Inc. is the only national program providing academically talented minority children with access to our nation’s finest public and private schools.  Here in New Canaan, the ABC house has guided 62 young men through this program since 1973.  Currently there are 8 male students attending NCHS.  They work hard, play sports, volunteer at local charities and provide diversity to our community.

The money raised this year also benefits local programs such as the New Canaan High School Scholarship Foundation, Waveny Care Network, New Canaan Cares, Meals on Wheels, Get About, New Canaan Library, New Canaan Community Nursery School, New Canaan Society for the Arts, the Mikey Czech Foundation and the Outback Teen Center.  Other supported programs include Horizons, Childcare Learning Centers, Children's Connection, Kids in Crisis, Cancer Care, Family Re-Entry, KEYS, Meals on Wheels, Norwalk Emergency Shelter, Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, Person to Person, Southern CT Storm Hockey, Star, Inc., The Workplace, Inc., Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care, Voices of 9/11, Women’s Mentoring Network, and the Domestic Violence Crisis Center.  These agencies benefit New Canaan and other Fairfield County communities.  The YWL congratulates these grant award winners and looks forward to the 2010-2011 fundraising theme, “KIDS:  Knowledge, Independence, Development, and Safety

    Kudos to Sponsors and Volunteers!

The 12th Annual Touch-A-Truck Family Festival was a great event on May 2, 2010 despite the rain delayof one week.  The sun came out strong as did the trucks, from the Fire Department’s hook and ladder truck to Karl Chevrolet’s Hybrid Tahoe.  We had a great day full of exciting activities and delicious food. On hand to serve lunch to all the hungry fans included Joe’s Pizza, Red’s All Natural Burritos, Cogolulu’s, Silvermine Market and Rolling Cones ice cream truck. We had exciting shows for kids and parents alike including Nomak from the Norwalk Police Department’s K9 Unit, the New England Dance Academy, Karl Chevrolet’s sponsored race track speedway and Chris Clark’s Mountain Bike Stunt Team. The Roaming Railroad toured passengers around the event with festive music and sounds of a real train. New England Bounce About set up their best ever Crash Course inflatable, and for the toddlers, a bouncing school bus. Mitch Hoffman from Bobby Valentine’s Sports Academy was there with pointers for your little slugger and Venture Portraits showed us how photography is truly an art form. Sparklies was selling great beaded sandals for girls and pj’s for kids of all ages.

The Town’s favorites were there including Old Faithful, the Getabout van, the New Canaan Police Department, the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the New Canaan Fire Department. We appreciate their time and dedication. If you want services that require big trucks, we had them. Gault’s big oil truck, Savatree’s cherry picker and Palladino’s giant tanker were there. Mill River Tree Service and Hoffman Landscapes showed off their heavy machinery. IBlast was there supporting yet another New Canaan based event and we appreciate their support and PR so much. Toddler Time Nursery School

had a booth to inform families of the fantastic programs they offer to the community.

Thank you to all the YWL volunteers who staffed the event and a big thank you to the South School custodians who made our day with all of their tireless help. Thank you to the sponsors of the program

as this event is not possible without your generosity. A great big thank you goes to the two event chairs, Maria Miller and Marie Miller for their dedication and endless enthusiasm. Thank you to the Town of New

Canaan for allowing us to hold this event in our community as it has been a New Canaan tradition for the last 12 years. To our participants, we hope you had a great day and thank you for coming and spending

time with us. The proceeds from the event go directly to our Giving Fund so that we can impact the less fortunate.

Signing off from Touch-A-Truck, until next year!
